Elon Musk Takes Stage to Reveal Cybertruck Details in Texas

In a dimly lit event space at Tesla’s headquarters, CEO Elon Musk recently revealed details about the company’s unconventional Cybertruck pickup. Musk hyped up the crowd by describing the Cybertruck as “a better truck than a truck, while also being a better sports car than a sports car in the same package.”

He boasted about the Cybertruck’s hard steel body being bulletproof and its windows being “rock proof.” Musk also highlighted its capability to tow over 11,000 pounds and accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 2.6 seconds. Furthermore, he emphasized the “super-tough” composite bed that is six feet long and four feet wide, claiming that the vehicle would “change the look of the roads” and make the “future finally look like the future.”

Pricing and Battery Range Details

However, Musk did not directly mention the pricing and battery range for the Cybertruck during the event. Later, it was revealed that the base model rear-wheel drive version of the Cybertruck is priced at an estimated $60,990, which is about 50% higher than the company’s original target of $40,000.

According to Tesla’s website, the base model rear-wheel drive Cybertruck is expected to have a 250-mile range battery and accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 6.5 seconds, while the all-wheel drive version would have a range of 340 miles and reach 0 to 60 miles per hour in 4.1 seconds.

Furthermore, the company plans to sell an all-wheel drive version of the Cybertruck for $79,900 starting in 2025.

Challenges and Competitors

During an October earnings call, Musk acknowledged the “enormous challenges” in reaching volume production with the Cybertruck. Despite the challenges, he presented several “production Cybertrucks” to customers at the event.

Meanwhile, competitors such as Ford, General Motors, and Rivian have also entered the electric pickup truck market. Rivian recently began offering a leasing option for select models of its all-electric R1T pickup truck.

The U.S. electric pickup truck market has not expanded as quickly as some initially thought. Several startups have faced challenges, and both GM and Ford have adjusted their plans related to EV trucks.

Tesla shares closed lower Thursday by about 2% and were flat after hours.

Overall, the Cybertruck launch event showcased Elon Musk’s ambitious vision for the future of electric pickup trucks. With details now revealed, consumers will have the opportunity to consider the Cybertruck alongside its competitors.
