### Retirement Tales: Enjoying Life in Mexico

It’s been five years since Janet Blaser, a former journalist, retired and moved from California to begin her pensioner’s life in Mazatlán, Mexico. The calmness and slower pace of life in her new environment have given Janet ample time to reflect on what’s important in life. Today, Janet shares her thoughts and reflects on the regrets of her younger years and offers advice to those pausing to think if they would have done things differently if they knew what they now know.

#### Regrets of the Past
At 67 now, she ponders over what she could have done differently in her youth. Three clear regrets surface.

### 1. Not Looking to the Future Early Enough
Janet sheds light on the missed opportunity of having a financial plan. Her setting birthed a mindset of a woman’s role in her family which restricted her thoughts to just being a homemaker and mother. The thought of investing, saving, or having a career path never occurred to her in those days.

Currently, Janet can’t help but wonder what life would look like if she had invested just $1,000 thirty years ago. At least it would have resulted in something grandeur.

### 2. Not Staying Present
The guilt of not spending enough quality time with her children when they were growing up haunts her. She realized that she was overtaken by the upkeep tasks and did see her children as real persons but rather tasks to be done.

Years later, Janet admits it was living a simple, happy life that was the best example for her kids.

### 3. Ignoring Innate Skills and Passions
In her 20s, Janet doubts doing what she loved and was good at – writing. It took her 35 years before she finally found her passion for writing. It was a career that gave full expression to her gifts – skills which she now sees could have benefited her earlier in life.

Sharing her hindsight, Janet encourages that it’s never too late to explore one’s passion, a fact she also ensured her kids knew growing up. With these regrets, Janet hopes to inspire younger generations and possibly provide the opportunity for many to learn from the experiences of a seasoned pensioner like herself.
