Russian Forces Try to Surround the Town of Avdiivka in Eastern Ukraine

According to the head of the town’s military administration, Russian forces are making a concerted effort to encircle and capture the town of Avdiivka in eastern Ukraine.

Avdiivka, located in the Donetsk region, has become a focal point of intense fighting in recent weeks. Russian forces are making an effort to capture this strategically important town in their bid to take control of the wider Donbas region.

Head of Avdiivka’s Military Administration Reports Increase in Intensity

Vitaliy Barabash, head of Avdiivka’s military administration, reported to Espreso TV about the escalated clashes in the region. He stated that “the Avdiivka sector has become even tougher” and that “the Russians have opened up two more sectors from which they have begun making assaults — in the direction of Donetsk and in the so-called industrial zone.” Barabash also noted that the enemy was attempting to storm the city from all directions.

Ukraine’s General Staff Reports Ongoing Defense Operations

Ukraine’s General Staff noted that its forces continue to defend the city despite the efforts of the enemy to surround Avdiivka. The military stated that “our soldiers are steadfastly holding the defense, causing the occupiers significant losses.”

US Reporter’s Detention Extension in Russia

A Russian court extended the detention of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, a US citizen, until January 30, 2024. Gershkovich was detained on charges of espionage by the Federal Security Service (FSB) on March 29, in Yekaterinburg.

Military Activity Continues Despite Snowstorms

Military operations in Ukraine have continued despite severe weather including snowstorms and high winds. Analysts at the Institute for the Study of War noted that the cyclone in the Black Sea has impacted the tempo of military operations along the frontline.

Deadly Snowstorms in Ukraine and Russia

Ten people have died from snowstorms in Ukraine. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko reported that the adverse weather had resulted in power cuts, blocked roads, and a total of 411 settlements losing power.

The southern regions of Ukraine and Russia, including the occupied Crimea and southern Russia, have suffered from extreme weather conditions which led to the deaths and injuries of numerous people. Superstorm winds and flooding have caused widespread power losses and blocked roads. President Zelenskyy has called for efforts to restore power supplies and assist those affected by the storms.
