Top 3 cities for expats to thrive revealed in new report from Internations

Malaga, Alicante, and Valencia, all located in Spain, have been named the top three cities for expats to thrive, according to the latest report from the online community Internations. The report is based on survey responses from over 12,000 individuals living in 172 countries or territories, providing insights into the social, financial, and work lives of expats.

Spain Dominates the List

Spanish cities have dominated the 2023 Expat Insider report, ranking as the best cities to live in for expats worldwide. The report ranks 49 global cities, with Madrid being ranked at No. 6 and Barcelona at No. 13. According to Malte Zeeck, the CEO and co-founder of InterNations, the Spanish cities did exceptionally well in elements contributing to the quality of life for expats. Factors such as warm climate, outstanding leisure options, nightlife, gastronomy, and exceptionally good healthcare all contribute to the high rankings of the Spanish cities.

Spain’s Health and Friendliness

Spain is considered one of the healthiest countries in the world, with one of the highest life expectancies in the European Union. The average Spaniard is expected to live to 82.4 years, versus an average of 80.6 years for all EU residents. Moreover, survey responses have indicated that it’s easy to settle in, make friends, and feel welcome in their new homes abroad. In fact, Malaga particularly stands out as the most friendly city in the world.

Individual City Highlights

Alicante, known for its low cost of living, has been praised by expats. Valencia boasts robust travel opportunities, while Madrid is loved for its culture and nightlife. However, Barcelona received the lowest ranking among the Spanish cities, with expats noting that they are not as happy with their living expenses and it’s not as easy to get settled into the local community.

Government Incentives

The Spanish government has made it easier for foreigners to move there to work remotely by launching a digital nomad visa for “international teleworkers.”

Expat Insider Rankings

The Expat Insider rankings are based on how expats feel across five main categories, including quality of life, ease of settling in, working abroad, personal finance, and an overall “expat essentials” category that evaluates things like how easy it is to secure a visa or open a bank account.

These findings offer valuable insights into the best cities around the world for expats to live and thrive. With Spain dominating the rankings, it’s clear that the country is a welcoming and appealing destination for those seeking a new life abroad.
