U.S. Navy Ship USS Carney Defends against Houthi Drones

The U.S. Navy destroyer USS Carney (DDG 64) came to the defense of commercial vessels under attack in the Red Sea. After receiving reports of the attacks, the Pentagon reported that the Carney had shot down several Houthi drones.

Commercial Vessels Under Attack

The attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea came at the same time as Yemen’s Houthi rebel group announced that they had targeted two Israeli ships. The Pentagon released a statement confirming the attacks and promised to provide further information as it became available.

Preliminary Assessments and Response

A National Security Council official later revealed that the preliminary assessments of the situation indicated that only the commercial ships, and not the Carney, were targeted. The attacks took place over several hours and are believed to have been carried out using Houthi missiles, marking an escalation in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.

Rescue Mission and Houthi Statement

The Carney, a U.S. naval destroyer, observed a ballistic missile being fired at a civilian commercial ship named the “Unity Explorer.” It responded to distress reports from the vessel and destroyed another Houthi drone heading towards itself and the “Unity Explorer.” In a statement on Sunday, the Iran-backed Houthi group claimed responsibility for launching missile and drone attacks against two ships believed to be connected to Israel in the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, also known as the Gate of Tears.

Yemeni Armed Forces Continue to Target Israeli Ships

The Houthi statement did not mention any attacks on U.S. ships, only the “Unity Explorer” and the “Number Nine,” both of which the group claimed were associated with Israel. The Yemeni armed forces have previously warned that all Israeli ships or any entities connected to Israel will be a “legitimate target” for attack until the war in Gaza ends. In November, the group said it had captured an Israeli ship.

Future Implications

The attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea have raised concerns about the escalating tensions in the region. The continuing threats and attacks on ships connected to Israel by the Houthi group have further complicated the situation. The U.S. Navy’s response to the attacks represents its commitment to protecting freedom of navigation and ensuring the safety of commercial vessels in the region.
